Funding for Windsor Forest dog park approved | News
SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC)- Plans for a new dog park in Savannah are moving forward.
As WTOC first reported back in June, Joe Tribble Park is the intended home for a second public dog park but it had not been funded.
The money has now been approved. $100,000 is in the 2013 budget for the dog park, part of a master plan for continued improvements at Joe Tribble Park, which is off Largo Drive in Windsor Forest on Savannah's southside.
It won't be built until 2014, but city officials say they know a lot of people will use it.
"What we've seen at Daffin Park is people come from southside and, actually, people come from all over," Joe Shearouse, Savannah Parks and Leisure Services bureau chief, told WTOC.
Shearouse says several new additions to the park, like picnic areas, weather shelters and other improvements will come first. The dog park will follow in 2014.
It's plans and layout will be similar, but bigger, than Daffin Park's public dog park. It is also $30,000 more expensive because they will have to remove trees to add the dog park to a wooded area near the park's pond.
It will have all the same features as Daffin Park's dog park, including areas for big and little dogs, watering stations, a run area and more.
Alderman Tony Thomas pushed for a place for dogs and dog owners to play, socialize and relax. It's not happening soon, but he says it is going to happen.
"I'm excited about it," Thomas told WTOC. "My dogs have a big backyard already, but for some folks and all, they don't have that option. To be able to get the dogs out to run who live in the apartments around Windsor Forest is a great thing."
The city isn't finished with dog parks yet. Once they finish the Tribble Park public dog park the plan is to build another one. The city is already looking at locations on Savannah's westside.
